Volleyball goes 2-2 at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Ursinus College volleyball team went 2-2 during a four-match invitational hosted by Smith College Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Ursinus won by scores of 3-0 over both host Smith and Husson, while dropping 3-0 matches to Manhattanville and Middlebury on Saturday morning.

On Friday, the Bears opened up with a 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23 win over host Smith. In that match, sophomore outside hitter Allison Raff (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) had 13 kills, with senior outside hitter Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) getting six. Junior right side Danielle Kenny (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and sophomore defensive specialist Morgan Dawson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) each had two.

Kenny finished with 15 assists, with freshman libero Sydney Gonzalez (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and freshman Cori Cichowicz (King of Prussia, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame De Namur) both having two service aces.

Defensively, Gonzalez had 20 digs, while Thiele had 19 and Raff had 15. Kenny added in three solo blocks.

Against Husson, Ursinus won by scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-11.

Raff had six kills in the win, with freshman outside hitter Megan Gombatz (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) chipping in with four. Junior middle blocker Sam Murphy (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) had a .429 hitting percentage with three kills on seven total attacks. Freshman Grace LaDelfa (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) had four assists.

Dawson and junior setter Emily van Mulbregt (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) had eight digs each, with Kenny getting two blocks.

Against Manhattanville, Thiele had had seven kills, with Raff getting six. Kenny added in four. Cichowicz and Kenny each had five assists.

Defensively, Gonzalez had 17 digs, with Thiele netting 16 and Raff with 13. Thiele and LaDelfa each had two solo blocks.

Against Middlebury, Raff had five kills with Gombatz getting three. Gonzalez had 13 digs with Raff getting 12.

For their efforts, Raff and van Mulbregt were named to the All-Tournament team.

Ursinus hosts Immaculata on Tuesday.
