Women's T&F Finishes Fifth at CC Championship

LANCASTER, Pa. – A bevy of place-winners and a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay kept the Ursinus College women's track and field team in contention for a top-three finish all afternoon at the Centennial Conference championships before the Bears ultimately settled in fifth place.

Ursinus briefly found itself as high as second place on another successful day at Franklin & Marshall, but the depth of a few of its closest competitors was slightly too much to overcome. The Bears finished with 77 points, just six behind fourth-place Haverford and a mere 20 out of runner-up Swarthmore.

The highlight of the day came during its final contested event as sophomore twins Michela Coleman and Rachel Coleman joined seniors Gabrielle Manto and Brittany Gasser for a runner-up performance in the 4x400-meter relay. Their time of 4:05.69 was a little over a second behind the indoor school record and just under two seconds back of first-place Johns Hopkins. It was the second relay medal of the weekend for the Coleman sisters, who grabbed gold in the 4x200 on Saturday.

The Colemans each scored in the 400-meter dash. Michela was fourth in 1:00.74, just off her personal best, while Rachel placed eighth with a career-best 1:01.88.

Following the sisters' points, the Bears had jumped into third place in the team standings. With three more scorers in the 60-meter dash finals, Ursinus had briefly ascended to second.

Freshman Kate Hunt led the Bears' trio of sprinters by placing fifth in 8.17. Sophomore Gianna Speranza finished seventh in 8.31, and classmate Molly Rodebaugh's 8.37 was a new personal best and good for eighth overall.

Hunt also earned a place in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in seventh with a time of 27.46.

Speranza, meanwhile, tacked on a fifth-place performance in the high jump after a leap of 4-9.75.

Gasser finished fifth with a 2:21.82 in the 400-meter dash, adding four points to the Bears' total.

Senior Caroline Buckley collected her second place of the weekend with a sixth-place showing in the long jump (15-7).

Manto, sophomore Meredith Steele, freshman Madison Tillman, and freshman Rachel Conhoff finished seventh in the 4x800-meter relay (10:12.95).
