Women's Tennis Earns 8-1 Victory over Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Ursinus women's tennis team impressed in their final non-conference match of the season as they downed Rutgers-Camden 8-1 on Friday afternoon.

 

With the win, the Bears improved to 9-3 overall as they have now won seven of their last eight matches. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raptors of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) dropped to 11-2 overall.

 

Ursinus edged the Scarlet Raptors in the doubles matches by winning two of three to gain the upper hand into singles. Sophomore Claire Burke and first-year Shannon Stewart defeated the duo of LeAnne Hall and Morgan Dempsey 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Sophomores Caitlin Vinsonhaler and Avery Samer edged Samantha Hoban and Laurel DiStefano 8-7 in a very competitive No. 2 doubles matched and first-year Allie Armour and senior Maddie Russell fell 8-5 at the No. 1 position to Sarah Ahrens and Tiffany Trivers.

 

It was all Bears in the singles matches as Stewart started the unbeaten run with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Morgan Dempsey at no. 6 singles. Burke took down Hoban 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles before Samer locked up the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over DiStefano at the No. 4 position. Junior Ava Compagnoni recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hall at No. 5 singles and Vinsonhaler rallied for a 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 win over Trivers at the No. 3 position. Russell capped the win for Ursinus at No. 1 singles with an epic 7-6, 7-6 win over Ahrens that involved tiebreakers in both games.

 

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 13th as they will take on No. 26 Swarthmore at 4 p.m. in Centennial Conference action.
