Women's Tennis Defeated by Salisbury On the Road

SALISBURY, Md. - The Ursinus Bears women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback in non-conference action to Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.

 

 

With the loss, the Bears fell to 7-3 overall and had their five-match winning streak come to an end. Meanwhile the Sea Gulls, ranked 16th by the ITA in the South Region, improved to 9-3 overall.

 

 

Salisbury won all three of the doubles points as they took the initial 3-0 lead in the match. At the first doubles spot, Salisbury's Veronica Cuellar and Katherine Tamesis downed the Bears sophomore duo of Avery Samer and Caitlin Vinsonhaler 8-3 to put the Sea Gulls on the board. Senior Maddie Russell and Ava Compagnoni were downed 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles spot by Hannah Carter and Sarah Cooper while the sophomore Claire Burke and first-year Shannon Stewart fell 8-2 at the No. 2 doubles spot to Sarah Dover and Elizabeth Christine.

 

 

In singles, the Sea Gulls clinched the match by winning the next five points but Compagnoni bested Sarah Cooper 6-4, 1-6, (10-7) at No. 5 singles to earn the Bears lone point of the match. In the other singles matches, Cuellar took down Russell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Hannah Carter locked the match up for Salisbury with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stewart at No. 6 singles. Christine won a 6-2, 6-0 match over Samer at the No. 4 position and Tamesis followed with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Vinsonhaler at the No. 3 spot. Burke fell 6-1, 6-4 to Dover at No. 2 singles which gave the Sea Gulls their eighth and final point of the match.

 

 

Ursinus returns to action Tuesday, April 5th as they will take on Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference action at 4 p.m.
