SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Maddie Russell added another signature victory to her ever-expanding rookie resume in the Ursinus College women's tennis team's 8-1 Centennial Conference loss at No. 25 Swarthmore on Wednesday.
Russell outlasted Christina Wang in a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 barnburner at second singles, the new crown jewel in her spectacular season. The freshman now owns a win over the number two player from a nationally ranked program in addition to prior triumphs against players from perennial conference playoff squads Franklin & Marshall and Washington College.
Russell is 7-5 at number two singles this season, which includes a 3-1 mark in conference play.
Another first-year player gave the Garnet a test, with rookie Brenna Trkula holding a 4-3 lead on Shirlie Wee in the first set at number three singles before the Swarthmore junior managed to edge out a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
The Bears go for their first conference win of the season when they travel to McDaniel on Saturday.
