Women's Tennis Blanks Bryn Mawr in Season Finale

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team wrapped up its season with a flourish, sweeping Bryn Mawr 9-0 in a victory that featured a number of milestones.

The Bears concluded the 2017 campaign at 12-7 overall and 4-5 in Centennial Conference play. The Owls fell to 4-12 overall and 2-7 in the conference.

All six Ursinus starters were double winners. Junior Ariel Danziger and freshman Caitlyn Sorelle opened the match with an 8-0 shutout of Eram Haider and Caroline Horvaitis at number two doubles, leaving them one shy of the single-season school record with their 16th doubles win of the season.

Seniors Robin Alsher and Christine Palazzolo posted an 8-2 defeat of Mariam Haider and Alice Podolsky at third doubles, while juniors Aileen Bevard and Ashley Nguyen were 8-5 winners against Lizzie Siegle and Sydney Kim on the top court. Bevard and Nguyen notched their 30th doubles victory together, making them the fifth and sixth players in program history to attain that milestone, while also marking the 50th overall triumph for Nguyen.

Sorelle polished off her perfect afternoon with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Eram Haider at second singles, and Alsher was close behind with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Podolsky in the sixth flight.

Nguyen and Palazzolo were both 6-4, 6-3 winners at third and fifth singles, respectively, and Bevard pulled out a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-4 decision opposite Siegle at number one.

Danziger closed out the sweep with a 7-5, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (10-6) victory against Mariam Haider at fourth singles, giving her an even 80 career wins.

Bevard moved into third in school history in overall wins (69), while Nguyen became the eighth to achieve 50 career victories; the 2017 Bears featured four of the top six winningest players in program history.

Alsher tallied her 25th career singles win in her last match, and Palazzolo tied for second all-time with her 14th singles win of the season. Palazzolo leaves Ursinus fifth all-time in total wins (62).
