Swarthmore's Singles Success Dooms Women's Tennis to CC Loss

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team came up with an impressive sweep of doubles play, starting Wednesday's Centennial Conference clash with Swarthmore on the highest of notes. But the Garnet flexed their muscles when the action switched to individual competition, taking all six singles flights in straight sets to recover for a 6-3 decision.

Ursinus (8-5, 1-4) came from behind on all three doubles courts in a battle of league foes separated by just one slot in the ITA's Atlantic South regional rankings; Ursinus came in 12th and Swarthmore 13th. Trailing 5-1 on the first court, sophomores Ashley Nguyen and Aileen Bevard reeled off seven games in a row to stun the top duo for Swarthmore (5-5, 4-1).

Down a break for much of the pro set, the number two team of senior BreAnna Bashaw and sophomore Ariel Danziger got it back at 6-all and won the last two games of a 9-7 affair to double the Bears' advantage. Junior Christine Palazzolo and senior Stephanie-Jane Seabra came away from a marathon match at third doubles with a 7-5 triumph in the tiebreaker, lifting the home side to a 3-0 edge.

Unfortunately, Swarthmore made quick work of singles play, as only Seabra (at number six) managed more than three games.

The Bears continue their CC slate at Gettysburg on Saturday, April 16.
