GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team is off to a fast start at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Peyten Lyons, freshman Sophie Lear, senior Clara Baker, and sophomore Sophie May made history in the 200 medley relay on Wednesday night by breaking their own Centennial Conference with a time of 1:43.16. The mark, which would have been good for sixth in the championship final, was easily enough to win the B final and place the quartet ninth for the highest relay finish in program history.
With 18 team points accompanying the B final title, Ursinus finds itself in 17th place in the team standings after the first night.
The Bears picked up another All-America certificate in the 200 medley relay after placing 13th a year ago. Baker, Lyons, and May were all members of that unit, and the addition of Lear helped them go even lower than the 1:43.99 they posted at the CC championship meet.
The All-America laurel was the eighth for Baker, extending her program record. Lyons is an All-American for the fourth time, while May collected her third certificate.
May was just outside the qualification zone in the 50 free prelims, placing 21st in a personal-best clocking at 23.62. Lear was right behind at 23.70 to tie for 25th.
