Women's Swimming Claims CC Debut

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's swimming team picked up its second win in less than 24 hours, defeating Dickinson 119-85 in the Centennial Conference opener for both sides.

Senior Peyten Lyons, junior Haley Sturla, senior Clara Baker, and sophomore Katherine Kurzinsky notched a victory in the 400 medley relay to kick off a stretch of five straight race wins for the Bears (2-0, 1-0).

Lyons came right back to grab first place in the 200 free (2:01.37), and Baker was right behind with her own winning swim in the 50 free (25.28).

Freshman Sophie Lear was first to touch in the 200 IM (2:13.89), where senior Caroline Powell was second (2:16.87). Fellow rookie Katie Schultz capped the hot opening stretch with a victory in the 200 fly (2:17.01).

Next came a pair of tight races, first a photo finish in the 100 free as Lyons (55.04) landed just .12 seconds off the pace set by the Red Devils' Molly Sternick.

May got the best of her own close swim, posting a time of 2:12.07 to edge Katie Schmidt by a little more than a third of a second.

After Lear took second in the 200 breast (5:23.92), Sturla finished the individual events with a win in the 200 breast and a mark of 2:33.03.

The Bears ended the meet like they started it – with a relay win. This time, it was May, Baker, Schultz, and Kurzinsky taking the 400 free relay in 3:44.40.

Ursinus welcomes Swarthmore to campus for its home opener on Saturday, November 3.
