Swarthmore eliminates Bears from CC Playoffs

Swarthmore eliminates Bears from CC Playoffs

Swarthmore, Pa. – Ursinus College went toe to toe with 12th-ranked Swarthmore College for a half during this afternoon's Centennial Conference women's soccer semifinal. But the top-seeded Garnet rattled off three consecutive goals in a span of just over four minutes right after intermission and the fifth-seeded Bears never recovered, trailing the rest of the way to a 3-0 defeat. Swarthmore advances to take on second-seeded Johns Hopkins, a 1-0 winner over McDaniel, in tomorrow's championship.

Ursinus (12-6-1) was outshot by a 12-3 count in the first frame, but junior goalkeeper Courtney Sullivan (Maple Glen, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) stood tall with five saves to keep high-powered Swarthmore (16-1-1) off the board. The Garnet, who have surrendered a mere three goals all season, wasted little time after the halftime break in asserting their dominance.

Senior Amanda Bosworth headed in a corner by classmate Melissa Trofa at the 48:02 mark, opening the scoring and the floodgates in one fell swoop. Less than two minutes later, Ursinus was faced with a 2-0 deficit as Swarthmore junior Katherine Zavez found the back of the net, and fellow junior Caroline Khanna polished off the offensive outburst with a third marker at 52:24.

Determined to keep their season alive, the Bears pushed onward, outshooting the hosts, 10-6, after halftime. Ursinus put four shots on frame, but Swarthmore senior Reba Magier was there to make the save each time.

The Garnet enjoyed an 18-13 edge in shots and a slim 3-2 corner kick spread. Junior Jeannie Jasinski (Hilltown, Pa./Pennridge) bolstered the Bears with four shots, with classmate Erin Farrell (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) adding three and senior Paige Abronski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace) registering two, both of them on goal.
