Bears Sweep Quad Meet after Hunt's Pin Over W&L.

Bears Sweep Quad Meet after Hunt's Pin Over W&L.

GETTYSBURG, PA. - The Ursinus College Wrestling team traveled to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon for a quad-meet with Centennial Conference opponents McDaniel, Washington & Lee, and Gettysburg. The Bears gearing up for Conferences in just over three weeks swept the field, rallying past host Gettysburg (30-12), before defeating McDaniel (37-16), and knocking off defending Centennial Conference Champions Washington and Lee 21-20.

Seniors Jason Carter (197lbs) and Malcom Hunt (285lbs) led the way for the Bears, each going 3-0 and anchoring the final two weight classes for Ursinus. Hunt returned to the mat for the first time since November 13th, after being injured at the Raich Rumble. The Senior won each of his three matches by pin fall, including sealing the Bears victory over defending Centennial Conference champions Washington and Lee.

Carter missed the first half of the season and returned last week to capture second place at the Will Abele Invitational. He followed his performance last week by collecting three wins including a 4-2 decision to keep the Bears in striking distance with the Generals.

Junior Terry Adams (125lbs) and Sophomore Dante Monaco (149lbs) both finished 2-0 during the quad meet, including key victories for the Bears. Adams grabbed the momentum for the Bears early upsetting Riley Parker of W&L by a decision 8-3. Parker is currently ranked 8th in the nation by d3wrestle.com and 15th by the NWCA. It's the second time this season Adams has defeated the 125 pounder for the Generals.

For Monaco over the last three weeks, he's been dominant in the neutral position, often using throws to capture his opponents off balance and collecting falls for his team. With the Bears leading 6-4 in their final dual, Ursinus needed a big match from Monaco knowing they would give up six points at 157lbs due to an injury. After escaping a high single leg from Washington and Lee 149 pounder Zamaloff, Monaco seemed to be caught off guard after Zamaloff charged in for a double leg. Monaco countered with a Lat Drop, throwing his opponent to his back and collecting a well needed pin for Ursinus.

After a forfeit at 157lbs, Washington and Lee rattled off three straight decisions to lead the match 20-12 with two matches remaining. After Carter collected a decision at 197lbs, the Bears would need a tech-fall or a pin to either tie or win the dual.  While leading 3-0 in the second period, Hunt would be defending off a single leg from Omisore of W&L when he would hit a cement mixer to collect the pinfall and give Ursinus the 21-20 win over Washington and Lee.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday January 29th as they host Merchant Marine and Johns Hopkins for Senior Day inside Helfferich Hall.
