Adams Reaches Regional Semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y. – Terry Adams put himself on the precipice of NCAA qualification and three other Ursinus College wrestlers remained alive in the consolation rounds after the first day of competition at the Mideast Regional championship on Saturday.

Adams advanced to the semifinals at 125 pounds and can punch his ticket to nationals with a victory in his final-four bout on Sunday.

Jake Folk (157), Kyle Shaffer (184), and Jason Carter (197) all stayed alive in their respective consolation brackets, giving themselves a shot at third place and an NCAA berth of their own.

Adams, seeded third, received a bye and needed just one win to book his spot in the semifinals. He did so with ease, scoring four takedowns in the first period alone on the way to a 15-6 major decision against Centenary's Dylan Luciano. The Bears' rookie will take on second-seeded Matt Caccoamise of Brockport on Sunday with a trip to the final – and an automatic NCAA qualifying berth – on the line.

Folk dropped his opening match to Ithaca's Sam Schneider, the No. 2 seed, but shook off the setback to pick up two wins in the consolations. He netted a 15-0 victory over Alfred's Cale Bartosch, then edged out a 2-0 win over Scranton's Kyle Shaffer.

Schaffer won his opening bout, 10-4, over Pitt-Bradford's Derek Ridgeway. He then conceded a hard-fought 4-0 decision to Merchant Marine's Joshua Glantzman, but came back to down Elizabethtown's Dayne Ross, 7-4, to keep his hopes going.

Seeded fourth, Carter moved to the quarterfinals with a 9-2 defeat of Merchant Marine's Sam Houston. He succumbed to a 16-4 major decision at the hands of RIT's John Donohue before pinning Oneonta's Matthew Burge late on in his first consolation tilt.

Gary Nagle lost to Cortland's Demeterius Henry, who eventually made the semifinals, at 174 before slipping past Oneonta's Matt Shields, 2-0. Nagle took Brockport's Christopher Eames to overtime, but Eames clinched a 7-5 decision with a sudden-victory takedown in the extra session.

At heavyweight, Ben Maack pinned Merchant Marine's Dan Dubinsky just before the second-period buzzer to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Brockport's Richard Knapp, who needed a late takedown to edge past Maack in a 4-1 final. The Bears' heavyweight trailed TCNJ's Tom Maretta, 1-0, after a tight first two periods, but quickly knotted the bout with an escape. Maretta, however, was able to score a late takedown to secure a 3-1 decision.

Jason Zollers won one match at 165 pounds.
