Five Reach Quarters at York

YORK, Pa. – Five members of the Ursinus College wrestling team advanced to the quarterfinals in a strong opening performance at the New Standard Invitational on Friday.

Adams' undefeated record received a stern test in his opening matchup with Chris Caban of Johnson & Wales, who stormed out to a 6-2 lead after a first-period reversal followed by four near-fall points. Adams recovered to score a reversal of his own and, after escaping to begin the second period, took Caban to the mat and polished off a pin with 24 seconds left in the frame.

Romeo Rodriguez stayed alive alongside Adams in the 125-pound bracket, pinning his Johns Hopkins opponent in 55 seconds in the first round before dropping a 9-3 decision to Brockport's Matt Caccamise. The rookie shook off a late tying reversal by Cortland's Ben Lloyd and walked off with a sudden-victory takedown to advance to Day 2.

Noah Supsic and Alfred Corradetti each made it to the quarterfinals at 157. Supsic downed Nate Johnson of Merchant Marine, 8-3, before Averett's Tony Blackman via 7-5 decision. Corradetti defeated Bradley LaMontagne of Johns Hopkins by a 6-2 count to reach Saturday's quarters.

At 197, Jason Carter easily handled York's Michael Reinhart, 13-1, to move on to the final eight.

Ben Maack was the fifth Bear to reach the quarterfinals, posting a 12-2 major decision over Roger Williams' Addison Boisvert in the heavyweight draw.

Gary Nagle won both a main-draw match and another in the consolation to see another day in the 174-pound tournament.

Ray Calderaio picked up a victory technical fall in consolations at 133.
