Wrestling Shines at Fall Brawl

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Terry Adams backed up his eye-opening start debut with a second individual title in as many tournaments, and fellow rookie Shawn Marchesano joined him in grabbing a championship belt to headline another impressive effort by the Ursinus College wrestling team at the annual Fall Brawl.

The Bears produced three other place-winners on the day, as Gary Nagle (174) and Jason Carter (197) took third and Ray Calderaio (133) finished fourth.

Adams, who also won at 125 pounds at the season-opening Messiah Invitational, was just as dominant in the Bears' home lid-lifter. The rookie posted two pins, a tech fall, and a major decision en route to his latest crown, which he secured by downing Elizabethtown's Austin Jones in just 2:17. Adams notched a 16-5 major against Johns Hopkins' Brent Lorin in the semifinals.

Marchesano rolled through with four consecutive bout victories in the 149-pound bracket, beginning with a 16-0 shutout of Elizabethtown's Shane Strausser. After pinning Delaware Valley's Dustin Childs, he defeated Etown's Josh Paisley by a 12-7 count to reach the title bout, where he shut out Del Val's Evan Widing, 4-0.

Nagle consolidated a runner-up performance in the season opener with another strong showing in the Floy Lewis Bakes field house. He tallied a 16-0 tech fall against Johns Hopkins' Grant Walnoha in the quarterfinals before bowing out to WPI's Brendan Marion, then pinned Etown's Hunter Beaudet and scored a 10-4 victory over Joe Paul of Johns Hopkins to lock up third place.

Carter took a more circuitous route, dropping into the consolations right away and posting five victories on the bounce. Included in that run were two falls and a couple of tight wins, one a 4-3 nail-biter against Liberty's Blake Barrick and the other a 6-4 defeat of Apprentice School's William Sorey in the third-place match.

Calderaio also lost in the first round, but reeled off three wins in a row to take fourth. He logged a major decision followed by two decisions, one a 9-7 thriller against teammate Kyle Seibert.

Romeo Rodriguez advanced to the semifinals at 125, pinning Apprentice's Dillon Messick before Jones edged him in a tight 4-2 match.

Kyle Schaffer was a semifinalist at 184, tallying an 8-1 victory against Hopkins' Nathan Wertheimer and a pin of Thaddeus Stevens' Edgardo Caraballo in the quarters.

Malcolm Hunt was also a semifinalist at 197, where he pinned Liberty's Sean Gillespie (2:41) and Etown's Tyler Phenegar (0:52) before falling to eventual champion Austin Amos of Liberty.

Ben Maack advanced to the semifinals at heavyweight with a pin of Liberty's Alex Hicks.

Seibert had two pins in the consolations at 133, while Brandon Miller produced three consecutive back-draw wins at 141, including two falls. Noah Supsic won twice at 157.

The Bears are back on the home mats next Saturday, when they host Penn College on Alumni Day.
