FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla . - A pair of Ursinus College wrestlers earned places in the highly competitive Citrus Invitational to cap a solid showing for the Bears at the annual event in the Sunshine State.
Freshman Collin Wickramaratna toughed out a sudden victory showdown in the third-place bout at 125 pounds, while senior William McGinley took sixth at heavyweight.
Wickramaratna grabbed his second third-place finish of the season, pairing that same result from the Fall Brawl with a runner-up effort at the Messiah Invitational. The first-year grappler fell on the short end of a 2-0 grinder with John Carroll's Andrew Perelka in Sunday morning's semifinal, but rebounded to reel off two consecutive victories and take third. Wickramaratna handled Ferrum's Jalen White, 14-6, to set up a thrilling battle with David Yeh of Williams. The match was all square at 3-apiece after regulation, but Wickramaratna put Yeh on the mat 45 seconds into the overtime period for the sudden-victory takedown.
McGinley opened his day with a 7-5 defeat of Ferrum's Tyrique Nolen, then sealed a 5-2 victory against John Carroll's Luca Santillo with a third-period takedown. He suffered a 5-1 loss to Alveno Matthews of Ferrum to fall into the fifth-place match opposite Liberty's Jefferey Allen, where he dropped a 5-2 decision.
The Bears return to action on January 5, when they host the annual North/South Duals.
