Wrestling fourth at Centennial Conference Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Ursinus College wrestling team finished fourth at the 2011 Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon, scoring five place winners.

Senior Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown), along with junior Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield)  and sophomore Teddy Conrad (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) each finished second in their respective weight classes, while junior Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished third at 149.

Sophomore William Cornely (Cinnaminson, N.J./Camden Catholic) was fourth at 285 to round out the place winners.

Murren, wrestling at 184 pounds, started his day with a bye as the bracket's top seed. He then defeated D.J. Neri of Gettysburg by a 5-1 decision to advance to the championship bout against Scott Lowe of the Merchant Marine Academy.

In the championship bout, he fell to Lowe by a slim 2-1 score. After the first period ended scoreless, Lowe got an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. In the third, Murren got an escape late in the period, but, Lowe had accrued more riding time and won the bout 2-1.

Blank started his day at 133 with a bye as the second seed. In his quarterfinal bout against Tom Goretsas of McDaniel, he won by injury default to advance to the final bout. In the championship against Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins, he lost 3-2. After the first period, Marcello outscored Blank 3-1 in the second period. After a Blank escape, Marcello held a slim 3-2 lead which turned out to be the final score of the bout.

For Conrad, the sophomore 197 pounder opened the day with a bye as the third seed. Against Erik Schott of the Merchant Marine Academy, he pinned Schott in 2:22 to advance to the finals. Pitted against top-seeded Reid Mosquera, Conrad lost by major decision via a 20-10 score. The bout was tied 4-4 after the first period, but, Conrad took a 5-4 lead via an escape in the second period and held that lead till Mosquera scored a take down for a 6-5 lead.

McCormick, wrestling at 149, started his day with a 3-0 decision over Logan Yox of McDaniel. In the semifinals, he was pinned by Martin Bell of the Merchant Marine Academy in 5:12. In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Rocky Barilla of Johns Hopkins in a 4-1 decision, before defeating Yox again in the third place bout, 8-1.

Cornely, wrestling at 285, pinned Ryan Miskanich of Stevens to start his day in :38. After falling via pin to Brock Glotfelty of McDaniel in 1:33, he defeated Nicholas Pallotta of Muhlenberg in the wrestlebacks by pin in :42. In the third place bout against Bobby Christopher of Gettysburg, he lost 3-2.
