Murren nets 100th win as Ursinus takes Centennial openers

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For Ursinus College senior wrestler Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown), the first home Centennial Conference quad match in three years for Ursinus was extremely special.

The senior added his name to the history book of Ursinus College wrestling as he netted career wins 100 and 101 on Saturday as Ursinus defeated both Johns Hopkins (29-12) and Gettysburg (31-12) to remain a perfect 6-0 in dual meets and started the conference slate with a 2-0 mark.

Murren defeated Gettysburg's D.J. Neri by a 5-1 decision, while also picking up a forfeit win at 184 pounds against the Blue Jays to move his win total past the century mark.

"His work ethic, determination and tenacity helped his achieve 100 victories," said longtime Ursinus coach Billy Racich after the match. "The coaching staff and the team are extremely proud of him. He was coached by a college teammate of mine (Dave Bowersox) in high school and Dave prepared him well for competition here in college."

"He continued that hard work ethic here at Ursinus, as he is the first one in the mat room and the last one to leave."

His match with Neri was 0-0 after the first period, before Murren took a 2-1 lead after the second period via a takedown. In the third period, he registered an escape and a takedown for the 5-1 win.

In the Gettysburg match, Ursinus five of the first six bouts as junior Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) defeated Matt Spano 2-0 at 133, followed by a forfeit win for sophomore Curtis Watkins (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) at 141.

At 149, junior Connor McCormick (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) defeated Matt Danielson via major decision, 12-0. In the 157 bout, senior John Whitham (Abington, Pa./La Salle) defeated Joe Fiore, 7-2. A forfeit at 165, awarded to sophomore William Reick made the score 22-5.

After Murren's bout, sophomore 197 pounder Teddy Conrad (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) pinned Marshall Plus in 1:48 to give Ursinus a 31-8 lead.

In the Hopkins match, Ursinus won four of the first five bouts as Blank won at 133 over Adam Stevens, 18-6, followed by a 4-3 win for Watkins over Duncan Crystal at 141, 4-3.
