Women's Lax Rally Falls Short

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team nearly overturned a five-goal deficit in the second half of Tuesday's spring-break showdown with Wooster, but the visiting Fighting Scots managed to keep the hard-charging hosts at bay to claim a 12-8 non-conference decision.

The Bears (0-5) trailed 8-3 early in the second stanza before a 5-1 run pulled them within a single tally. Katie Cressman started the surge by sending a low shot just inside the left post, and Katherine Eckhoff sandwiched a pair of goals – her first of the season – around a driving laser by Abby Krasutsky. After Eckhoff's second marker, a free-position shot, Grace Langen delivered a lefty shot to the lower right corner of the cage to trim the deficit to 9-8 with 9:20 remaining.

That was as close as Ursinus got, as Wooster (3-1) stabilized itself with back-to-back goals in an 18-second span to regain enough separation to put away the home side.

Krasutsky led the Bears with three goals for her second career hat trick, with Cressman and Eckhoff each providing a pair.

Becca Lewis captained a stout second-half defensive effort with seven caused turnovers, a single-game school record, and four ground balls.

Ursinus was limited to a pair of free-position scores among three goals in the first half, while the Fighting Scoters were able to score six times from the run of play. Wooster scored twice in a span of 28 seconds in the early goings before Cressman countered with a beautiful individual move to beat her defender and send a bouncer into the back of the net.

Wooster went on another spree, finding the back of the cage three times in a span of less than three minutes to go up 5-1. The visitors twice led by five goals, including on Jenny Grossman's goal with 1:16 to play before halftime.

Krasutsky potted a pair of free-position goals, both on low efforts, to account for the lion's share of the hosts' scoring.

Wooster held slender advantages in shots (35-30) and draw controls (11-10). Hannah Shaw had four goals and an assist to pace the Scots, with Ashley Boersma adding two goals and two assists.

Krasutsky tacked on four draws, three ground balls, and a pair of caused turnovers to her impressive stat line. Alexa Machado finished with 11 saves, while counterpart Katie Shideler made 12 for Wooster.

The Bears head to the Lehigh Valley on Saturday to meet Moravian.
