SEWANEE, Tenn. – Bridget Sherry and Kaci McNeave went wild to get the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team in the win column.

Sherry scored a career-high six goals to go with two assists and McNeave paired four goals with four assists in an offensive explosion for the Bears (1-5), who built a huge lead on Sewanee before surviving a late charge by the hosts in a 16-12 decision.

Senior Courtney Cortese had two goals and two assists for Ursinus, which put 23 of its 30 shots on goal and scored on more than half of them. Senior Emily Blaszkow (six), Sherry (five), and Cortese (four) combined for 15 of the Bears' 19 draw controls, while sophomore Carli Heimann registered a career-high three caused turnovers.

After the teams split the first two goals of the game, the Bears got going in a big way. The next five minutes saw an avalanche of five straight markers laid down by the visitors, three of them by Sherry and three assisted by McNeave.

The Tigers came back with three of their own, but sophomore Hanna Crowley and Cortese scored less than 45 seconds apart to restore a four-goal margin, and Sherry's free-position shot sent Ursinus into the locker room with a 9-6 lead at the break.

The Bears took control with a huge start to the second half. McNeave converted an eight-meter attempt less than a minute in, then set up the first of two straight goals by freshman Jill Verrelle. McNeave found the back of the net again before Sherry did it twice in a row, first on a free-position attempt, to make it 15-6 at the 18:51 mark.

Sewanee (7-3) made a game of it late, scoring four in a row to cut it to 16-12 with 5:36 left, but that was all the scoring for the afternoon.

Sophomore Katherine Eckhoff paced the Bears with four ground balls and delivered an assist for her first point of the season.

Senior goalie Kaitlyn France finished with nine saves for Ursinus, which was 17-of-18 on clears and held a 19-11 edge on the draw. The Bears went 4-for-10 on free-position chances and outshot Sewanee, 30-25.

With a win under its belt, the women's lacrosse team comes back home to face Babson on Wednesday, March 20.
