Fords Start Fast, Hold Off Women's Lacrosse

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Ursinus fell victim to big runs at the start of each half and was unable to bridge the gap in a 13-9 Centennial Conference defeat at Haverford on Wednesday.

Haverford (9-6, 5-3) scored the game's first three goals and used a 6-1 spurt out of the halftime break to remain in the CC playoff chase with a critical victory. Freshman Bridget Sherry produced her first collegiate hat trick to go with collegiate bests in points (four) and draw controls (five) for Ursinus (7-8, 3-5). The Bears finished the game with four unanswered goals, but by then the damage was already done.

Sarina Manetta, Maura Grant, and Rina Rosnow all scored within the first four minutes as the Fords quickly put Ursinus in catch-up mode. The teams traded goals until intermission, freshman Kaci McNeave getting the Bears to within 6-3 after converting a feed from junior Lindsey Grabell with one second left in the first period.

After halftime, it was the Elyse Adler show. Adler scored Haverford's first four goals of the second stanza, all in the first five minutes and change, and assisted on one by Annie Kelly as part of a 6-1 run that left the home side firmly in control, leading 12-4 with 10:15 remaining.

Sophomore Franny Liberatoscioli cashed in on a free-position chance to stop the bleeding, but Adler responded only 33 seconds later. The Bears held the Fords scoreless over the final 9:11 and got tallies from junior Amy Kohout, senior Devin Brakel, McNeave, and Sherry to close the contest.

Sherry grabbed two ground balls, caused a turnover, and scored on three of her four shot attempts for Ursinus, which outperformed Haverford in shots (27-23) and draw controls (14-10) but could not find an answer for Adler. The Fords' senior attack finished with six goals and an assist, with Manetta and Allie Gibbons providing a goal and two assists apiece. Haverford, which came in ranked second in the CC in shooting percentage (.464), scored on 56.5 percent of its shots.

McNeave and Kohout collected two goals each for the Bears, and freshman Courtney Cortese finished with three ground balls, three draws, and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Alycia Hildebrand joined Cortese with two caused turnovers in addition to a ground ball and a draw control, while junior Lisa Grous controlled four draws, leaving her one shy of 100 for her career. Senior Margaret Philbin racked up five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers, making five saves in the cage.

Noelle Smith led the way with four caused turnovers in front of Megan Chenworth, who finished with five saves in front of the Fords' net. Claire Cote had two ground balls and three caused turnovers for a Haverford team that at one point was receiving votes in the IWLCA Division III poll and only this week fell out of the Mid-Atlantic regional poll.

Ursinus will honor its five seniors as part of pregame Senior Day festivities before taking on Muhlenberg on Saturday, April 30.
