Women's Golf Starts Strong at McDaniel Invitational

ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's golf team started the 2016-17 campaign in impressive fashion Saturday, landing one stroke shy of the school record for lowest team score at the McDaniel Fall Invitational.

Sophomore Rebecca Chiger picked up right where she left off after an All-Centennial Conference season, carding an 82 (+10) to tie for fifth place overall in a field of 40 golfers. Ursinus turned in a team tally of 345, good for third place and just one stroke off the program record set during last year's dual against Gettysburg.

The Bullets captured the team crown with a score of 328. Stevenson (341) was second, followed by Ursinus, McDaniel (346), Muhlenberg (351), Dickinson (364), and Susquehanna (402). Muhlenberg's Aine Filler was awarded the individual trophy on a tiebreaker after matching McDaniel's Meg Schlesinger and Stevenson's Morgan Wirtz with a 7-over 79 on the 5833-yard course at Bridges Golf Club.

Sophomores Matison Leand and Emily McGarrigle each scored an 85 to tie for 10th overall. Leand's round was three shots better than her previous career low, while McGarrigle's was a strong opening performance after a 10th-place showing at the CC Championship last year.

Junior Sarah Thompson fired a 93 and junior Shelby Bryant (126) capped off the Bears' contingent.

The women's golf team hosts the Ursinus Fall Invitational on Tuesday, September 27 at Raven's Claw.
