Women's Hoops Closes Out Season with Road Battle at Johns Hopkins.

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Ursinus College Women's Basketball team capped off their 2022 season with a hard-fought contest against Centennial Conference foe Johns Hopkins. The Bears couldn't muster up a comeback in the final minutes of the contest and lost 49-42.  

First-year forward Chinwe Irondi led the Bears with her 9th career double-double, tallying 14 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Alyssa Martin chipped in 8 points behind shooting two of four from the three-point line.  

The Bears offense came out on fire outscoring the Blue Jays 21-16 in the first period. Ursinus jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 8:56 mark, after Alison Lisanti knocked home a three pointer. After a Blue Jays layup, Irondi got on the board after a jump shot from the paint. Johns Hopkins tied the game at seven a piece at the 6:07 mark thanks to a layup from Jadyn Murray. The Blue Jays followed up with a 5-0 run and led 12-7 with 4:44 remaining in the first. Alyssa Martin and Gabby Downs answered with back-to-back three-pointers and the Bears regained the lead 13-12. Later in the first, Downs connected from deep and made the score 16-14 with 2:11 left in the period. The Bears closed the period on a 5-2 run and held a 21-16 lead after the first quarter.  

Both teams struggled in the first few minutes of the second quarter with Johns Hopkins scoring the first basket at the 7:16 mark. After a basket and a foul, the Blue Jays tied the score at 23 a piece with 3:37 left in the first half. Michaela O'Neil converted on a driving layup with 25 seconds left in the half, but the Bears Maria D'Aulerio drilled a buzzer beater to tie the score at 25 at halftime.  

The lead would change hands throughout the third quarter until Aleah Spruell nailed a three-pointer at the 2:33 mark, giving the Blue Jays a 38-34 lead. Irondi would convert on two free throws and the Bears trailed 39-36 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Alyssa Martin would tie the game at 39 a piece with 8:34 to play in the contest. After a Blue Jays three-pointer, the Bears tied the score at 42 a piece thanks to two free throws from Irondi with just under three minutes to play. Johns Hopkins would close out the quarter with a 7-0 run and earned a 49-42 conference victory.  

The Bears closed out the 2022 season winning three of their final five games and will look to build off the momentum heading into next season.
