Softball Escapes Wentworth to Earn Wednesday Split

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Ursinus College softball team held on to win game one of its doubleheader on Wednesday against Wentworth before falling to Montclair State to earn the split. Amanda Ladzinski brought in two RBI in the Bears win while Morgan Comfort threw seven innings, allowing just five hits.

Game 1

The Bears bats came out hot on Wednesday. Mackenzie Brennan led off with a triple to right field and then Comfort earned a walk to put two runners on early in the inning. With the bases loaded Ladzinski singled down the right-field line to bring Comfort and Brennan in to score, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead. Another single, this one by Delaney Baker, scored Heather Lazer to put Ursinus up 3-0 after the opening frame.

The Leopards answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. After both teams went scoreless in the second, Wentworth added another run in the third as the Bears led 3-2.

Comfort would retire 12 of the next 17 batters and would not allow a Leopard's batter past second base. After a lead-off single in the fourth, the junior forced a fly-out to center and a ground-out to short to end the inning. Comfort would walk a batter in the fifth to put the tying run on base, but back-to-back fly-outs in the field kept the Bears in the lead.

The Leopards put runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but again, Comfort came up big in the circle and her outfield continued to stay strong behind her. With a ground-out to third-base, the Bears secured the narrow, 3-2 win.

Game 2

The Bears would take on Montclair State in game two of the doubleheader. Back-to-back RBI singles from the Red Hawks led to a five-run first inning as the Bears quickly went down 5-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Brennan led off with her second triple of the day and then came home on a sac-fly by Jordan Moore. The Bears went on to load the bases allowing a Baker walk to bring in a second run. A strikeout, however, ended the side.

After an eventful opening inning, both teams went scoreless in the second. The Red Hawks added runs in the third and fourth innings as the Bears trailed 7-2. However, Ursinus answered in the bottom of the fourth. Singles from Julia Eckels and Moore put two runners on and then an RBI-double to center from Ladzinski brought both home to bring the Bears back within three at 7-4.

The Red Hawks came back to score a pair of runs in the sixth and then added another run in the seventh as the Bears were unable to answer, falling 10-4.

Ursinus will go up against DeSales and Marywood in a doubleheader on Thursday.
