Softball Wins Big Against Cougars, Loses in Extras to Thunder

Clermont, Fla. - The Ursinus College softball team came out in a big way on Monday defeating Concordia Chicago, 10-0, in game one of its doubleheader before falling, 9-7, to Wheaton (Ill.) in extras. Heather Lazer and Amanda Panati each brought in two RBI in the team's win while Kayla McTamney threw five scoreless innings.

Game 1

The Bears came out strong for a second straight day. Back-to-back doubles by Lazer and Morgan Comfort put Ursinus on the board right out of the gates. The Bears loaded the bases in the second, leading to five runs. Amanda Panati singled through the left side to bring in Ally St. Jean and then three straight batters reached as Panati, Mackenzie Brennan, and Julia Eckels each scored to make it 6-0.

Ursinus went 1-2-3 in the third but got back on track in the fifth. Nicole Smith took advantage of a Cougar error to score St. Jean and then RBI from Panati and Eckels scored two more as the Bears took a commanding, 9-0 lead. Brennan capped off the scoring and made it ten runs on the day, scoring on a wild pitch.

McTamney threw a near-flawless game in the circle. The sophomore allowed just three hits while throwing all five innings. She retired ten straight batters and had allowed just one hit before giving up a pair of singles in the fifth.

Game 2

Ursinus looked to keep up its momentum from game one and take it into game two. In the circle, Jennifer Hammons put runners on second and third to start the game but struck out a Thunder batter swinging before forcing an infield pop-up to end the side unscathed. The two sides went three up, three down in the second as both teams went into the third tied, 0-0.

The Bears finally ended the scoreless run in the third. Jordan Moore walked to put a runner on base and then two straight fielding errors brought her home to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead.

After another 1-2-3 inning from the Thunder, the Bears bats picked up where they left off. Allyson Meakim and Brennan each doubled to left field to score a run and then a single by Jordan Moore through the left side made it 4-0.

The Thunder put a run on the board in the top of the fifth but Anna Mefford answered with an RBI of her own in the bottom of the frame.

Taking a 5-1 lead into the seventh, the Bears looked to close out the game. However, Wheaton (Ill.) loaded the bases right away and then four straight batters made contact to bring in four runs to score to tie the game at five runs apiece and force extras.

The Thunder again loaded the bases in the eighth and scored four more to go up 9-5. Trailing for the first time all day, the Bears looked to rally. Moore singled to right to bring in a run and then a Lazer single up the middle brought in a second to score as the Bears came back within two at 9-7. A force out at home put two outs on the board in the next at-bat and then a ground out ended the game, 9-7.

The Bears will have Tuesday off but will be back in action on Wednesday against Wentworth and Montclair State.
