Softball Scores 12 to Beat Carnegie Mellon but Fall to Mount Union

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Ursinus College softball team surged to 12 runs in a dominant victory in six innings over Carnegie Mellon before falling to Mount Union in Sunday's doubleheader split. Heather Lazer continued her hot run at the plate, bringing in four RBI in the Ursinus win. In just four games, the junior already has 12 RBI on the season. In the circle, Kayla McTamney bounced back, striking out four while throwing all six innings.

Game 1

The Tartans struck first in the top of the opening frame. After walking the lead-off batter, McTamney allowed a pair of singles which brought in two runs for Carnegie Mellon. The Bears went 1-2-3 in the bottom half but came out strong in the second. Lazer was awarded first base after being hit while Amanda Ladzinski and Ally St. Jean each walked to load the bases. Megan Hasulak then singled to left-center to bring in Delaney Baker and St. Jean, tying the game.

Carnegie Mellon retook the lead on an RBI-double in the top of the third as the Bears trailed 3-2. However, the Bears bats picked up right where they left off in the second. Julia Eckels led off with a triple to spark what would be a huge inning for Ursinus. After Morgan Comfort walked and stole second, Lazer doubled to right center, bringing both runners home and giving the Bears their first lead of the day.

Ladzinksi and St. Jean both reached base to once again load the bases and then a string of three consecutive singles by Hasulak, Joran Moore, and Mackenzie Brennan made it 7-3 for the Bears. The inning didn't stop there. Comfort singled to left-center and Lazer got hit at the plate to bring in two more runs as Ursinus left the third inning with a 9-3 lead.

The two sides went scoreless in the fourth before Comfort hit her first home run of the season and sixth of her career over the left-field fence to make it 10 runs for the Bears offense. The Tartans brought in one run in the top of the sixth, but the Bears added two more in the bottom half as Lazer capped off the Ursinus scoring with a single down the right side for her fourth RBI of the game. The Lazer RBI-single gave the Bears a 12-4 lead and secured the Ursinus win.

Game 2

Ursinus capitalized on a Mount Union error in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. However, the Raiders scored on a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame as the Bears went down 3-1. Mount Union brought in four more runs in the second, headlined by a two-RBI triple to go up 7-1 after two.

The Raiders added a run in the third and fourth innings before the Bears responded in the fifth. Brennan and Allyson Meakim earned walks to put runners on first and second. A Lazer single brought Brennan across to score one, but an infield pop-up ended the inning with the Bears trailing 9-2.

Mount Union scored one more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double as Ursinus fell 10-2.

The Bears will have another doubleheader on Monday when they face Concordia Chicago and Wheaton (Ill.)
