LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team swung hot bats in a 12-0 domination of Franklin & Marshall but saw a late lead slip away in the second tilt as the two sides played to a split in Lancaster.

The Bears (10-10, 1-3) picked up their first Centennial Conference win of the season as they pounded out a season-high 17 hits in Game 1 on the way to dominating the Diplomats in five innings.

Senior Kayla Quinn and sophomore Amanda Ladzinski both drove homers the Franklin & Marshall's tall left-field fence in the second inning of the opener. Quinn finished the first game with four RBI and scored once in a 2-for-4 effort. Ladzinski's two-run home run was the first of her career as she went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Junior pitcher Jennifer Hammons (5-5) fared well in both pitching starts. She logged nine innings on the day, allowing one run on six hits, walking two and striking out eight.

In her first-game victory, Hammons tossed five scoreless innings, scattering four hits with no walks and four strikeouts win. The righty faced just three batters over the minimum in the contest.

Hammons was backed up by great defense on the day as the Bears played two games without committing an error.

Also in the first game, senior Sammi Donato went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Sophomore Megan Hasulak collected three hits with a double, two runs and an RBI.

In Game 2, freshman leadoff hitter Mackenzie Brennan led the Bears with a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI.

Game 1: Ursinus 12, Franklin & Marshall 0 (5 innings)

The Bears were incredibly difficult to hold down at the plate in the opening game as they hit .531 (17-for-32) at the dish. While the Bears were busy scoring runs, Hammons did her part by shutting out the Diplomats in five innings.

Ursinus received contributions from up and down the lineup. Nine Bears hitters registered hits and six had multi-hit efforts; eight players also scored a run in the mercy-rule rout.

Early on, Hammons worked around an infield single that was moved up to third with one down in the opening inning. A pop up back to the mound and a strikeout stranded the runner at third.

In the second, the Bears drove two home runs, part of a four-hit frame to take a 3-0 lead. Quinn sent a blast over the fence to give Ursinus the first run of the game.  

Senior Gabrielle Manto smashed an opposite field triple to right. She wheeled around the bases, beating the relay throw easily. Ladzinski followed up Manto's extra base hit with a two-run homer out of the park.

Another inning-ending strikeout by Hammons stranded an F&M runner at third.

Ursinus scored four runs on six hits in the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Donato and Brennan set up Hasulak's RBI double down the left-field line. The Diplomats changed pitchers in the middle of the inning. Sophomore Heather Lazer reached base on a hit then Quinn flew out to right with the bases loaded to score Brennan.

Comfort singled home Hasulak before Manto's second hit scored Lazer to go up 7-0.

Manto threw out a F&M runner trying to stretch out a double off the fence to end the fourth.

The Bears posted another six-hit inning in the fifth, scoring five runs. A single by Ladzinski started the fifth. Pinch hitter senior Samantha Garritano doubled in the left field gap and Donato singled for the third time to score both Bears.

Hasulak picked up her third hit and Lazer picked up her second knock, plating Donato. Quinn's hit drove in two more runs to lead 12-0.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 5, Ursinus 4

The Bears took a 4-1 advantage to the sixth before the Diplomats' bats came to life. F&M (8-10, 2-2) picked up six consecutive hits to plate three runs, knotting the score 4-4. A bases-loaded walk gave the Diplomats their first lead of the day.

With one out in the seventh, Comfort doubled to left as the Bears' potential game-tying run. Ladzinski stepped to the plate with two down and grounded out to first base to end the potential rally.

The Bears picked up where they left off in Game 1. Comfort drew a leadoff walk in the second to start a three-run stanza. Donato singled home Comfort with two outs, then Brennan's second hit brought a pair of Bears home to go up 3-0.

Franklin & Marshall's Caitlyn Erdman hit a home run to begin the fifth inning. Freshman pitcher Kayla McTamney inherited a runner on first as she came on in relief of Hammons with no outs in the fifth. McTamney worked out of a minor jam to take a 3-1 edge into the sixth.

In the sixth, Ladzinski drew a leadoff free pass before McTamney's sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring positon. After a hit by pitch, Brennan reached on an error. She got on base in all four of her plate appearances. Hasulak then lifted a sacrifice fly to right.

Hammons pitched four solid innings in Game 2, allowing one run on two hits, walking two, and fanning four.

F&M pitcher Sabrina Ryan drew both pitching starts. Ryan (5-4) earned the complete game win in Game 2.

Ursinus hosts a Saturday doubleheader against Gettysburg starting at 1 p.m. Before the opener, the Bears will honor their six seniors as part of an early Senior Day celebration.
