Softball Bested by Randolph

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus College softball team scored in each of its first three at-bats against Randolph on Tuesday morning, but the Bears were unable to keep up with a high-powered Wildcats offense in a 13-5 defeat.

Sophomore Kayla Quinn (2-for-3, two runs) and freshmen Isabella Dewes (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Faith Carson (2-for-3, RBI) all had big days at the plate for Ursinus (2-3). Carson delivered an RBI double as the Bears opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and Dewes' two-run single staked Ursinus to a 4-3 advantage in the second. Sophomore Sammi Donato's run-scoring double in the third stretched the margin to 5-3, but it was all Randolph after that.

Consecutive doubles by Kate Hodgkiss and Jordyn Knapp, the former of the two-run variety, gave the Wildcats (8-5) the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Randolph kept coming, adding three more runs in the fifth, the last on an RBI single by Hodgkiss, and walked off with four more in the sixth. Becca Montgomery's two-run home run made it 11-5 and, after a walk, Brittany Campbell's RBI triple set up the clinching RBI single by Tiffany Allen with one out.

Hodgkiss was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored from her leadoff spot, while Dianne Davis finished 3-for-3, scored three times, and drove in two runs. Montgomery had two hits, two runs, and three RBI and Allen ended up 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Quinn stole three bases and scored two runs for the third time this season.

Junior Kaitlyn Willis (1-1) took the loss, surrendering nine runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Ursinus takes on Mary Washington (1:30 p.m.) and Penn College (3:30 p.m.) on Wednesday.
