Softball takes two from Immaculata

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College softball team swept its second straight doubleheader on Monday, defeating Immaculata by scores of 6-5 and 4-1.

In the opener, the Bears rallied back from a 5-2 deficit in the final two innings, as the Bears scored the game winning run with one out as senior center fielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) hit into a fielders choice that scored sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville).

The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the second on a two-run single by freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville). Mercurio had a two-out triple in the second.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Mercurio singled home freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) while Derella stole home. Mercurio would later score on a RBI groundout by freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley).

Mercurio finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Hyman also had two hits, while Derella had two runs scored.

Junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) got the win, improving to 5-10. She struck out three and walked three.

In game two, a two-run single by Mercurio in the second gave the Bears a 2-1 lead as Derella led off the inning with a triple.

In the fourth, Mercurio scored on an error, while freshman designated player Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) scored on a RBI single by senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).

Willis got the win, improving to 6-4. She struck out two and allowed just five hits.

Ursinus closes the season on Tuesday against Moravian.
