Bears Softball Swept by Haverford

Fords Sweep Bears

The Ursinus College Women's Softball Team was swept by the Fords of Haverford by the scores of 9-1 and 12-4. The Bears were not able to generate enough offense to keep pace with the high scoring Fords.

In the first game Ursinus struck first in the second inning when junior second basemen Meredith Watters (Coatesville, PA) singled to score freshmen catcher Sarah Berardo (Keyport, NJ) to give Ursinus the 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived though when just two innings later the Fords fired back with three runs of their own. Senior outfielder Julie Garlick (Waynesboro, PA) knocked in one of her three RBI's of the game to help the Fords extend their lead to 3-1.

Heading into the sixth inning Haverford held onto their slim 3-1 lead as Ursinus was able to blank the Ford in the fifth. However, the bats of Haverford came to life in a big way and they tattooed the Bears for six runs in the top of the sixth. Garlick knocked in two more runs, while senior infielder Jill Schnall (Wayne, PA) knocked in one of her two runs to help stretch the lead to 9-1.

Ursinus was unable to rally back in the bottom half of the inning and the Fords took the victory 9-1. One of the biggest reasons for the loss was Ursinus combined to go 3-20 from the plate as a team while Haverford went 10-28. The loss dropped the Bears to 8-13 overall and 0-9 in the CC.

In the second game Haverford got off to a quick start when junior catcher Kristin Tatum (Salt Lake City, UT) singled into left field to give the Fords the 1-0 lead. However, Ursinus would retaliate in the bottom of the second junior catcher Shelby Edison (Pottstown, PA) reached first on a throwing error allowing two runs to score to give Ursinus the 2-0 lead.

Just an inning and half later though the Haverford bats came to life again to the tune of an eight run third inning. Sophomore pitcher Kendall Chambers ( Rocklin, CA) knocked in two of her three RBI's to help extend the Fords lead to 9-1.

That was all that was needed as the Ford would tack on three runs in the top half of the sixth to leave with the 12-4 win. Freshmen pitcher Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, MD) was credited with the loss, now 3-4 on the year, as Ursinus fell to 8-14 overall and 0-10 in the CC. Their next game will be Thursday April 6th as they take on the Shorewomen of Washington College in a double header affair at Ursinus at 3PM and 5PM.
