McDaniel sweeps softball

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Homestanding McDaniel swept both ends of a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Ursinus, winning both game by a 9-1 score in five innings.

In the opener, Ursinus (8-13, 0-8 Centennial) tied the game at 1-all in the second on their lone hit, a homerun by senior centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township). The home run, off pitcher Caroline Brehm, was the first one hit off Brehm this season.

In the circle, junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) took the loss, falling to 3-6. She struck out one and walked six.

In game two, McDaniel (15-7, 7-1 Centennial) trailed 1-0 after the top of the first when Heinke singled home freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) with one out. McDaniel tied the score in the bottom of the frame, and then scored three more in the second.

Barry finished with two hits and a run scored, while sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville) had a double.

Freshman pitcher Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) took the loss, giving up eight hits and six runs in four innings of work.

Sophomore pitcher Devin Cinalli (Miami, Fla./Archbishop Coleman Carroll) pitched 2/3rds of an inning in relief, striking out one.
