Softball sweeps Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball stepped out of conference on Thursday afternoon and pulled off a sweep of Elizabethtown College. The Bears (8-11) won game one 7-3 and took game two from the Blue Jays (7-11) by a 6-4 count.

In game one, Ursinus scored three times in the third and six innings to take a 7-1 lead. Freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while senior centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.

Freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) went 1-for-4 with a three-run double for Ursinus, who finished with 12 hits in the opener.

Junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) improved to 3-5 with a three strikeout, three walk performance.

In game two, Ursinus led 5-2 after scoring four runs in the third inning. In game two, Mercurio was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Hyman had a double and drove in two runs.

Sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville) joined Hyman and Mercurio with two hits in the game, while Derella and senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) each had two runs scored. Derella also had a triple in the game.

Freshman pitcher Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) got the win, her first of the season. She struck out one and walked four while allowing just three earned runs.

Ursinus heads to McDaniel on Saturday.
