Softball swept by F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – In its first doubleheader in a week, the Ursinus College softball was swept by Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial matchup on Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Bears saw the host Diplomats rally for three in the bottom of the seventh to force a tie and then the Dips pushed one across in the eighth for a 6-5 win. In game two, F&M (10-2, 2-0 CC) saw Ursinus (6-9, 0-4 Centennial) rally to within one at 4-3 in the sixth, only to see the Diplomats plate three in the bottom of the sixth in a 7-3 win.

In the opener, Ursinus plated five runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead. After Meredith Watters and Casey Derella got on a base on singles, and Carly Gartenberg got on via a walk, Ellen Goldstein reached on an error scoring Gartenberg. Pitcher Zoe Heinke then doubled to left center scoring Derella for a 2-0 lead.

Delia Mercurio then had a single down the left field line to score Goldstein for a 3-0 lead, followed by Rachel Hyman scoring  both Heinke and Mercurio on a two-run single.

F&M would get two runs in the fifth as Samantha Burns hit a home run, followed by a RBI single by Crystal Good.

In the seventh, Erin Russell scored on a passed ball, followed by Patricia Crigler scoring on a RBI single by Megan Ryan. Ryan would eventually score on an error in a rundown to tie the score.

In the eighth, with the bases loaded, Russell would score when Ryan was hit by a pitch forcing the winning run in.

 Heinke took the loss, falling to 3-4. She struck out three and walked one while allowing 12 hits. Derella finished with three hits, while Hyman had two and two RBI.

In game two, F&M took a 4-0 lead after a two-out error kept the inning alive. Ursinus got one back in the fifth as Meredith Watters hit a double that scored Rachel Hyman. In the sixth, Ursinus put two across when Derella scored on a wild pitch with Goldstein scoring on a RBI single by Mercurio.

Hyman finished with two hits in game two.

Kaitlyn Willis took the loss, falling to 3-3. She allowed four runs (all unearned) in the fifth while walking two. Bridget Winay pitched 5.1 innings in relief, striking out three and walking four.

Ursinus will host Washington College on Tuesday.
