Softball swept by second-ranked Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – Playing in the Salisbury University tournament on their way home from Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Ursinus College softball team was swept by the second-ranked Salisbury in a pair of games on Friday afternoon.

The Bears dropped the first game of the doubleheader 7-1, before the Sea Gulls (5-1) defeated Ursinus (6-4) 9-1 in five innings in the nightcap.

In the first game, Salisbury took a 4-0 lead after two innings, before Ursinus got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when senior centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) had a RBI groundout scoring freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley).

The Bears collected just two hits in the game, with Barry and junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) hitting safely. Heinke was tagged with the loss, falling to 3-1. She allowed just four earned runs while striking and walking two.

In game two, Salisbury scored three in the first and four in the fourth to take the win. Ursinus got three hits from Barry, while junior catcher Shelby Edelson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) both hit safely. Heinke had a RBI hit scoring Barry in the third inning, which cut the Ursinus deficit to 3-1.

Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville) took the loss, falling to 3-2. She went one inning, allowing three runs while walking one.

Ursinus will play Capital and Lynchburg on the second day of the tournament on Saturday.
