Softball splits opening games in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In its opening day of the 2015 season, the Ursinus College softball team split a pair of games in Myrtle Beach. In the opening game, the Bears defeated Bridgewater (Va.) 6-5 in eight innings, while falling to PSU-Harrisburg 11-9 in the night cap.

In the opener, junior right fielder Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) singled home freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, PA./Saucon Valley) as Barry was placed on second as part of the international tie breaker rule

Barry finished the first game 3-for-5, while senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin), freshman pitcher Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional), junior catcher Shelby Edelson (Pottstown,  Pa./Pottsgrove) and sophomore centerfielder Carly Gartenberg (White Plains, N.Y./Westchester Hebrew) each had two hits.

Freshman pitcher Katilyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville) got the win, striking out 14 while walking one.

In the nightcap, the Bears and Nittany Lions went back-and-forth as the Bears had a 7-6 lead before PSU-Harrisburg scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

The Bears had 14 hits, with senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Heinke, Barry and Gartenberg (White Plains, N.Y./Westchester Hebrew) each had two hits in the loss. Goldstein came one hit (HR) away from the cycle.
