Track Teams Claim Five Wins at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Bringing a contingent of speed and power event competitors to Allentown, the Ursinus College track and field teams collected five individual victories and a number of personal bests at Friday's Muhlenberg Invitational. Event winners for the Bears included senior Erin Farrell (55-meter dash, 200-meter dash), juniors Jequan Mitchell (200-meter dash) and Adam Myers (shot put), and sophomore Sam Pope (triple jump).

Pope, already the Centennial Conference leader in the triple jump, extended his best performance by three-quarters of an inch to 45-4.25; the sophomore's hold on first place on the league list is now almost three feet.

Myers continued his strong start to the season, tossing an indoor personal best for the second time in as many events. This time he added four inches to his top mark, hurling a 45-7.00.

Farrell and Mitchell each paired together two strong sprints. Farrell's clocking of 7.58 seconds was enough to win the 55-meter dash in a tight finish that also included DeSales' Emily Jacobson (7.64) and Muhlenberg's Shana Joseph (7.67). Her time was less than a tenth of a second off the program record set by Audrey McKenna in 2005. Farrell made it a second individual victory with a mark of 27.49 in the 200-meter dash.

Mitchell won the 200-meter dash in an impressive clocking of 23.67 (good for ninth in the CC) and placed third in the 55-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.67.

The women put forth a strong showing in the shot put. Freshman Sophia Simoes took second at 33-10.75, and sophomore Briana Campbell outperformed her personal best by more than two feet with a throw of 30-2.00. Campbell's toss was nearly four feet more than her previous season high and elevated her seven spots on the CC performance list.

Sophomore Caroline Buckley notched a season best in the triple jump, placing second with an indoor-best 33-1.00 that moved her up a spot into sixth on the CC performance list. Buckley finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles, where freshman Charley Darkes-Burkey (personal-best 9.57) was fourth and junior Catherine Buczek (9.73) was sixth.

Freshman Matt Gallagher's 20-1.50 in the long jump was just shy of his personal best and good for third place overall.

The track and field teams get right back in action on Saturday at Lehigh's John Covert Classic.
