Men's Tennis Opens at ITA Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Will Oberholtzer won the consolation of his singles bracket to highlight the Ursinus College men's tennis team's trip to the ITA regional championships over the weekend at Mary Washington.

Playing in the B4 bracket, Oberholtzer dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision in his opening round match. He rebounded to claim a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over an opponent from Christopher Newport before clinching the consolation title with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win against Haverford's James Mckenzie. 

Rob Ritchie also competed in the B4 bracket, reaching the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Salisbury's Christopher Catan before bowing out with a 6-3, 6-2 setback at the hands of Mary Washington's Andrew Cooper. 

Lars Jespersen lost both of his matches in championship singles, narrowly missing out on advancing in the consolation draw after a 4-6, 6-4, 10-0 defeat to Christopher Newport's Eddy Porsmyr-Hansen. Darby Rogers went 0-2 in the B6 bracket, including a tiebreaker loss to Salisbury's Jahyden Pappas.

Jespersen and Oberholtzer lost two close matches in championship doubles, falling 8-5 to Karl Hoegstedt and Ryohei Kawai of Washington College in the main draw and 8-6 to Salisbury's Russell Willenborg and Luke McMullen in consolations.

Rogers and Ritchie competed in the B1 doubles tournament, falling 8-4 to Franklin & Marshall's Anthony Casale and Pedro Norte and 8-6 to Pappas and Russell of Salisbury. 

The Bears head to York (Pa.) for their lone dual match of the fall coming up on Saturday.
