COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team's home finale was one for the history books, as the Bears treated the Patterson Field faithful to a record-breaking fireworks display in a 20-7 Centennial Conference rout of Muhlenberg.

Seniors Ian Desenberg and Lou Harrison each scored three goals and classmate Gerard Brown dished out four assists in their last home game for the Bears (3-10, 2-5), who had six players tally multiple markers in a relentless assault on the Mule net.

When the dust settled, Ursinus had fired off a whopping 70 shots, surpassing the previous school record of 61 set four years ago against Wooster. Twenty of them found the back of the net and several others rang pipes as the Bears posted their first conference home win of the year.

Freshman Hakan Atillasoy joined Desenberg and Harrison with a hat trick. Freshman Ian Vogt scored the first two goals of his career and was joined by freshman Rei Lopez in opening his collegiate account, sophomore Ben Minardi produced his first multi-goal game, and junior Peter DeSimone and sophomore Bobby McClure each rang up two goals.

The Bears played one of their most efficient games in recent memory, turning it over only five times while capitalizing on 17 Muhlenberg miscues.

Brandon Moyer staked the Mules to an early lead, but the rest of the first quarter was entirely dominated by the home side. Twice the Bears scored back-to-back goals in a span of six seconds or less, the first burst coming just under three minutes in when DeSimone saved a ground ball and went in alone for a righty bouncer that tied the score. Lopez scored right off the ensuing faceoff five ticks later for a 2-1 edge.

After Muhlenberg leading scorer Ethan Grossman knotted the contest, a senior-to-senior connection from Brown to Desenberg gave the Bears the lead for good.

Atillasoy netted the first of his three first-half markers to double up the Mules before another lightning strike had the Bears out and running. Minardi, who scored his first career goal at Haverford on Saturday, made it two in as many games, and five seconds later McClure ripped the net off a faceoff win and quick feed by Lopez to make it 6-2 at the 2:23 mark of the period.

Ursinus outshot Muhlenberg, 21-3, in the first quarter and committed only one turnover to seven for Muhlenberg.

Atillasoy got hot early in the second quarter, freeing himself at the right post for a shot in tight. The rookie then finished off a stunning one-handed wraparound shot at the opposite post to move Ursinus out to an 8-3 lead with 8:29 to play in the second.

Muhlenberg got back in it with a run of three unanswered goals, eventually scoring in transition on a man-up opportunity to slice the Bears' advantage to 8-6 with 2:02 left. But Desenberg stopped the bleeding with a top-shelf rocket from distance with 50.4 ticks remaining to send Ursinus into halftime with a 9-6 lead.

The Bears reasserted themselves with dominant second half that saw them outscore the opposition by an 11-1 count. Desenberg completed his hat trick on a man-up rocket assisted by Harrison a few minutes into the third, and Harrison potted the first of his three goals in the period to make it 11-6. After a Mules answer, Harrison scored consecutive tallies – the first from freshman Joe Mercurio and the second an extra-man missile from Brown – and sophomore Evan Scott fired a shot past Muhlenberg's Garrett Pope in transition as Ursinus doubled up the Mules at 14-7 with 20.4 seconds to go.

McClure became the eighth player in school history to score 30 goals in a season with 9:55 to play, taking a pass from Brown and faking the goalie before finishing into an open net. Forty seconds later, DeSimone polished off a beautiful give-and-go sequence with Brown.

Brown's four assists gave him 97 for his career, four shy of the program record held by Anthony Tori '07.

The onslaught extended through the rest of the contest, as sophomore Joe Donnelly got on the board before Minardi netted his second of the day. Vogt pocketed two unassisted goals in the final 2:39.

Garrett Pope finished with 18 saves for Muhlenberg. Junior Elliott Shevitz recorded seven for the Bears, including the 200th of his career.

Lopez and sophomore Noah Frantz had five ground balls apiece to help Ursinus to a 46-25 surplus in that category.

Ursinus was 3-for-5 on extra-man chances and went 19-for-20 on clears.

The men's lacrosse team concludes the 2018 season at No. 12 Dickinson on Saturday.
