Men's Golf Tees up New Season

WILMINGTON, Del. - The Ursinus College men's golf team kicked off the 2016-17 season with a solid performance at the Swarthmore/Neumann Invitational, placing fifth in a nine-team field with a cumulative card of 326.

Junior Lamar Saxon fired a 4-over 75 to lead the way for the Bears, who finished 28 strokes behind Cabrini. The Cavaliers took the team title with a 298, edging Muhlenberg (300) by just two shots. Swarthmore's White squad was third with a 306, followed by Eastern (317), Ursinus (326), Philadelphia University (333), University of the Sciences (337), Swarthmore Maroon (342), and Neumann (362).

Saxon tied for 7th overall in a field of 47 entrants at Rock Manor Golf Club. The Bears' top swinger wound up just three shots behind Swarthmore's Dan Altieri, who won a tiebreaker with Cabrini's Daviod Gall for the individual trophy via a match of cards. 

Freshman Ryan Hodgdon impressed in his first collegiate round, firing a 79 to tie for 16th overall. Junior Ryan Crawford shot an 83, while senior Anthony Barbine and freshman Brian Barrett carded matching 89s. 

Saxon had four birdies on the afternoon, two of them coming in the final three holes. Hodgdon birdied the par-3 second hole, and Crawford posted a 3 on the par-4 7th. Barrett's first career birdie came on the par-4 13th. 

The men's golf team will host its annual Ursinus Fall Invitational at Raven's Claw Golf Club on Tuesday.
