Men's Basketball drops season opener to Staten Island, 71-64

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – College of Staten Island junior guard T.J. Tibbs had a game-high 23 points as the Dolphins (1-0) defeated Ursinus (0-1) 71-64 Friday night in the second game of the Wesleyan University Tip-Off tournament.

The Bears will play Anna Maria at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the consolation game.

For Ursinus, sophomore forward Jon Ward (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led the team with 18 points, with senior guard Matt Hilton (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) adding in 13points.

Sophomore forward Kevin Janowski (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) had a game-high nine rebounds as Ursinus enjoyed a 32-28 advantage on the glass, with the Bears picking up eight offensive rebounds. The difference in the game turned out to be from the foul line as CSI went 16-for-21 (76.2 percent) while Ursinus connected on just 50 percent of their chances (4-for-8). The Bears also committed 21 turnovers.

After the two teams traded leads, CSI took its largest lead to date at 13-7 with 13:57 left to go on a foul shot by freshman forward David Hughes. The Dolphins would eventually increase the lead to 18-9 with 11 minutes left in the half, before Ursinus rallied back to take the lead at 23-22 with 6:18 left on a layup by Ward.

The Bears would go up by six points at 28-22 with 4:01 left in the first half as Hilton hit a three-pointer. CSI would rally back, but, Ursinus had a 30-28 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Dolphins took the lead for good with 18:13 left in the game as Tibbs scored a jumper to make the score 36-35. CSI would go up by as much as eight in the second half, while Ursinus would get as close at 68-64 with 22 seconds left on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Matt Donahue (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity).

Freshman guard Jesse Krasna (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) had six points in his collegiate debut for the Bears.
