COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Ursinus freshman forward Jon Ward
(Allentown, Pa./Parkland) had a game-high 23 points,
including 19 points in the first 20 minutes as the Bears (9-6, 5-3
Centennial) ran to a 75-54 win over Swarthmore (3-12, 2-6
Centennial) in men's basketball play Saturday afternoon.
Ward shot 9-for-11 from the field and had 14 straight points in a
span of 3:30 in the latter portion of the first half.
Senior guard Keith Page (Manchester, England/Blair
Academy) had 16 points off the bench for Ursinus, who got
25 points from its reserves in the win. Junior guard Matt
Hilton (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) had 11 points, with
freshman forward Kevin Janowski (New Egypt, N.J./New
Egypt) adding in ten.
For Swarthmore, freshman forward Will Gates had 17 points, with
junior forward Ryan Carmichael scoring ten. The Garnet, who had
defeated Ursinus in the team's first meeting of the season, shot 25
three-pointers in the contest and only connected on four (16
percent).
Swarthmore started out with a 7-2 lead at the 17:17 mark of the
first half as Carmichael connected on a jumper. Ursinus got back
with two points twice, before taking the lead for the first time at
13-12 with 13 minutes left on a three-pointer by Page.
After a Gates jumper with 12:39 left gave the Garnet its last lead
at 14-13, Ursinus took the lead for good on a jumper by junior
forward T.J. Jones (Verona, N.J./Verona) at 15-14
with 12:17 left. The Bears would outscore the Garnet 30-10 over the
final 12:17 to take a 45-24 lead at intermission.
The Bears shot the ball like a seasoned marksman in the first half,
connecting on 64.3 percent (18-for-28) of their shots, including
5-of-9 (55.6 percent) three-pointers.
In the second half, the Bears went up by as much as 24 points and
were never threatened.
Ursinus held a 40-27 lead on the glass, with senior guard
Remy Cousart (Philadelphia, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep)
grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Gates had five for Swarthmore.
Cousart also had nine assists, with Hilton grabbing three steals.
