Men's Basketball claws out 62-57 road win over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Ursinus freshman forward Jon Ward (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) had a game-high 19 points, while senior guard Remy Cousart (Philadelphia, Pa./Holy Ghost) added in 18 as Ursinus (8-6, 4-3 Centennial) held off McDaniel (7-6, 3-3 Centennial) 62-57 at the Gill Center Wednesday night in men's basketball play.

Junior guard Matt Hilton (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) added in seven as the Bears made 9-of-11 foul shots in the second half to seal the win.

For McDaniel, senior guard Miguel Jones scored 16 with junior guard Michael Jarboe added in 15 for the Green Terror.

Ursinus held McDaniel to just 39.3 percent shooting in the contest (22-for-56).

It was the visitors taking the early lead as the Bears went up by nine early at 15-6 with 13:52 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Cousart. A foul shot by freshman forward Kevin Janowski (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) with 11:32 left gave Ursinus a ten-point edge at 16-6.

McDaniel clawed back to within four points three times, but, each time Ursinus responded. The Green Terror did mount a short run with 4:48 to go, outscoring the Bears 9-0 to take a 26-24 lead with 2:20 remaining on a layup by sophomore forward Louis Sarris-Grau.

A three-pointer by freshman guard Matt Donahue (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) with 1:23 left gave the Bears the lead back at 27-26. McDaniel would take the lead into the locker room at 30-29 after a jumper by Jarboe and a dunk by Sarris-Grau.

Ward hit two foul shots with 31 seconds left for Ursinus' last points of the first half.

In the second half, Ursinus took the lead for good at 37-36 with 17:26 left on a layup by Janowski. From that point, McDaniel got within one point twice and tied the score at 55-all with 3:44 left on a three-pointer by Jones.

Ward then scored five straight points, capped by a three-point play with 1:30 left for a 60-55 lead.

Trailing by three, Jones missed a jumper with 16 seconds left and Hilton grabbed the rebound. Hilton, who leads all of Division III in foul shooting percentage, sank two freebies with 14 ticks left for the final margin.

Cousart and Hilton finished with four assists each, while Ward and junior forward T.J. Jones (Verona, N.J./Verona) had five boards a piece. McDaniel had a 33-26 edge on the glass, with senior forward Joseph Potucek grabbing seven.

Ursinus hosts Swarthmore on Saturday at 3 p.m.
