Field Hockey Halted by No. 2 Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. - The No. 10 Ursinus College field hockey team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 4-0 setback in a titanic Centennial Conference tilt at No. 2 Johns Hopkins.

Looking for a fourth victory against a top-10 side this season, the Bears (8-3, 3-1) were unable to contain the relentless attack of the Blue Jays, who remained undefeated and gained the inside track to hosting the conference tournament.

With a 23-5 advantage in shots and 17 penalty corners, Ursinus keeper Jordan Ulsh was under fire from the start. She made a valiant effort to stem the tide, racking up a career-high 12 saves, but the Blue Jays' persistence was too much.

Johns Hopkins (12-0, 5-0) was turned aside in the opening minutes by a defensive save from Erin McIlhenny, but the blue and black broke the deadlock on a goal by Abby Birk with 2:14 to play in the first quarter.

The Blue Jays piled it on with a lightning-quick sequence in the second as the connection from Sadie Abboud to Maddie Brown-Scherer resulted in back-to-back transition goals in a span of 56 seconds. Hopkins tacked on a fourth marker just shy of the 10-minute mark in the fourth.

Devon Carroll led the Bears with two shots and forced the lone save needed by Hopkins goalie Alexis Loder. McIlhenny's defensive save was her seventh of the year and the 14th of her career.

Ursinus looks to get back on track with a trip to Bryn Mawr on Wednesday.
