Field Hockey Shuts Out Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College field hockey team ran its winning streak to four games with a 3-0 Centennial Conference triumph at Swarthmore on Wednesday night.

Senior Mikayla Jordan had a goal and an assist and juniors Erin Saybolt and Gemma Dufoe each scored a goal for the Bears (4-2, 2-0), who have outscored their opponents by a 17-2 margin during their recent hot stretch.

Saybolt opened the scoring in the 13th minute, depositing a feed from Jordan for her third goal of the season. Despite holding a 9-1 advantage in shots and earning seven penalty corners, the Bears were still clinging to a one-goal edge when the halftime buzzer sounded.

That changed quickly in the second half, when a period of sustained pressure on the Garnet cage culminated in Jordan tapping home a rebound off a shot by classmate Bridget Sherry just over two minutes into the stanza. It marked the second straight game with a goal for Jordan, who netted the first of her career in Saturday's win at McDaniel.

Sophomore Devon Carroll set up Dufoe's insurance marker with just under 10 minutes to play, her first assist of the season. Carroll fed the ball into the circle for Dufoe, who touched it in to complete the scoring and give Carroll her third helper in as many games.

The second half was a much more even proposition, and required a strong presence from senior goalkeeper Jules Singer. Swarthmore (3-4, 0-2) matched Ursinus with eight shots after intermission, and half of them were on goal. But Singer was equal to the task in collecting her 11th career shutout.

Swarthmore's Zelda Bank finished with 10 saves.

The field hockey team hosts Gettysburg on Saturday as part of Homecoming and Family Day festivities.
