Getting Defensive

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Scoring four goals in the first seven minutes of the game, the Ursinus College field hockey team (6-2, 2-1 Centennial) rolled to an 8-0 win over Swarthmore (1-7, 0-3 Centennial) Wednesday afternoon at Clothier Fields.

Maria DiCioccio and Megan Keenan, along with Amber Steigerwalt each had two goals in the win, while Devin Brakel had a goal and an assist.

Ursinus had a 35-4 edge on shots, and owned a 14-4 advantage on corners.

Keenan scored her first goal at 1:35 on an assist by Danielle Stong, while Keenan assisted on the second goal of the game at three minutes flat when Stephanie Cooper scored.

Brakel scored her first goal 20 seconds later for a 3-0 edge, followed by DiCioccio's first goal at 7:05. She scored her second at 14:53 on an assist by Brooke Overly.

Steigerwalt would score her goals back-to-back, one at 27:18 and one at 61:41 to give the Bears a 7-0 lead, while the final goal of the game came from Keenan at 69:16. Brakel assisted on Steigerwalt's first goal.

That was more than enough for the Ursinus goalkeepers, as all three saw action in the contest. Danielle DeSpirito played the first half and made three saves, while Sydney Godbey and Jules Singer split time in the second half.

Ursinus heads to McDaniel Saturday.
