Football Shuts Out F&M

Football Shuts Out F&M

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - A complete performance on both sides of the ball propelled the Ursinus College football team to a dominating 28-0 Centennial Conference victory over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.

Jack Psenicska threw four touchdowns - two of them to Octavious Carter - and the defense turned away everything the Diplomats threw at it in posting the team's second league shutout in the last three seasons. F&M managed just 218 yards of total offense, finished 4-of-15 on third down and failed on both of its fourth-down tries.

The Bears, fresh off a historic upset at No. 8 Muhlenberg, came out firing with a 12-play, 78-yard touchdown march to open the game. Ursinus picked up a pair of third downs and Psenicska completed three passes to Kevin DePrince before hitting Carter for a 19-yard strike.

The game script then followed a series of punts as neither team managed to dent the scoreboard again until the second half. F&M had the ball to start the third quarter but the Bears quickly took it away as Aaron Diamond rose up to intercept a deep pass at midfield. Ursinus took advantage of the short field as Psenicska hooked up with DePrince on a perfectly thrown fade to the front corner of the end zone, doubling the lead to 14-0. Samuel Ragland picked up a critical third down on the drive, jinking his way through defenders and shaking off tackles to gain 14 and keep the march alive.

The game got out of hand quickly from there. After forcing another punt, Psenicska put enough air under a deep ball for Zach Throne to run under it and dash all the way to the end zone for an 84-yard touchdown and a 21-0 advantage with 5:02 to play in the third.

Two plays later, it was 28-0. The Diplomats turned it over on a bad snap, recovered by Jack Ginley III at the plus-27, and Psenicska took his shot right away. He cashed in on it, hitting Carter in stride in the back of the end zone to complete the scoring.

Psenicska increased his touchdown total to 13 with another outstanding effort, and Octavious Carter continued his breakout campaign with a second multi-score performance; Carter now has six touchdowns through four games.

DePrince was the preferred target, hauling in seven balls for 63 yards and his third touchdown of the season.

Ragland rushed for 96 yards on 21 totes and added three receptions for 24 yards.

Brett Gross headlined a swarming defensive effort with 11 tackles and a pass breakup. Aaron Anderson broke up two passes, while Ryan Bodolus and Ginley split a sack.

The Bears limited F&M quarterback Logan Clouse to 8-of-18 for 99 yards and an interception, while holding the Diplomats' running back stable to an average of 2.7 yards per carry.

Billy Cook delivered a pair of punts of 50-plus yards, including a career-best 59-yarder that was downed inside the 5-yard line.

Ursinus stays on Patterson Field to take on Susquehanna next Saturday.
