Team Effort Lifts No. 6 Swarthmore Over Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Five Swarthmore College Baseball players had multiple hits in a 7-6 Centennial Conference win at Ursinus on Tuesday.

The No. 6-ranked Garnet (14-5, 2-1) were in cruise control for the majority of the game, but the Bears (10-8, 1-2) pieced together a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth.

Swarthmore fell behind 1-0 in the first inning as Ursinus junior Alex Mumme hit his conference-leading sixth home run of the season to right field.

The Garnet took a 2-1 lead in the third. Junior Cole Beeker and senior Conor Elliott had RBI singles.

Senior Jackson Roberts added to Swarthmore's lead with an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Senior Charles Levitt scored on the play. He reached base with a double.

Swarthmore expanded its lead to 5-1 in the sixth as sophomore Sam Jacobson and junior Jared Gillen singled in one run apiece.

Beeker doubled to score Levitt in the eighth, and Jacobson's RBI single in the ninth proved to be the difference in the game.

Ursius plated one in the eighth, and Swarthmore junior Ryan Warm came out for the ninth in attempt to pitch a complete game. He was pulled after walking the first batter. His final line was eight-plus innings, six strike outs, three earned runs, three walks and seven hits allowed.

Garnet relievers issued three more walks before senior Charles Groppe was called upon with runners on second and third and two outs. He got the only batter he faced to fly out to Gillen in center field, picking up the first save of his career.

Levitt and Elliott had three hits each for the Garnet. Gillen, Beeker and junior Holden Bridge all had two.

Through 19 games, Bridge (.444) , Beeker (.435) and Levitt (.434) are second, third and fourth in the Centennial Conference in batting average this season.

Swarthmore returns home for its next game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Garnet welcome the Bears to Clothier Field.
