Softball splits on day two as they beat Penn State Brandywine for key win

Leesburg, Florida–Sage's softball team continued their spring training trip with a pair of games on Saturday. In the opener, Sage dropped a 6-3 decision to Ursinus College. The Gators rebounded to collect a 4-2 win over Penn State Brandywine. Sage is now 1-3 on the year.

Against Ursinus, a grand slam in the first inning propelled the Bears to an early 4-0 lead. Ursinus tacked on two more run in the fourth before Sage added their three runs in the top of the seventh but their rally fell short.

Sage got a two RBI double from rookie Makayla Lindsey (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) in the top of the seventh as she went 2/3 in the action. Sage's senior Kristen Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) added another stolen base as did junior Emily Agate (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey).

Junior pitcher Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) worked the complete game, allowing six runs off eight hits with one strikeout. She drops to 0-2 on the young season.

Against Penn State Brandywine, Silk put Sage on the scoreboard with a double after freshman shortstop Katelyn Rice (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) reached on an error at short. Lindsey drove in a pair of runs to give Sage a 2-0 lead.

Sage added two more runs in the fifth as rookie Sam Shallcross (Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had a RBI sacrifice fly and sophomore Kate Keeley (Waterbury, CT/Sacred Heart) had an RBI single to spot Sage to a 4-0 lead.

Penn State Brandywine added their two runs in the top of the seventh, but Sage held on to get the key 4-2 win.

Sage's senior captain Alicia Swavely (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) earned the complete game win after fanning six batters in the circle. She stands at 1-1 after allowing two unearned runs off five hits.

Sage will be back in action on March 8 taking on John Jay College at 9 a.m. and Alverno at 1:30 at Legends Way Ballfield.
