Ursinus Defeats Baseball in Game 1, 9-3

SANFORD, Fla. – Early scoring put Suffolk baseball in a hole it never climbed out of that saw Ursinus take the series opener over the Rams, 9-3, Friday afternoon at Boombah Complex.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | Ursinus 9
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-6) | Ursinus (8-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk started the scoring in the top of the first as Blase Cormier's single up the middle brought in Tim Brigham. Brigham drew a base on balls after getting another life when Alex Mumme dropped the designated hitter's foul ball in right field and moved into scoring position on Rich Gilbride's single through the left side.

The Bears responded and then some in the home half of the inning with three runs to take the lead they would never relinquish.

Two innings later Ursinus padded the distance even more when it put a lopsided five runs on the board to make it an 8-1 game that turned into an eight-run margin at the end of the fifth.

Down eight runs, the Rams looked to make moves in the top of the seventh. Zack Aresty's double to right center ignited the rally as the extra base knock plated pinch hitter Marc Birbiglia, who reached on an error. Aresty would then come in on Joe Rufo's ground out to second, but the scoring stopped there as Nik San Antonio flew out to right for the final out of the game.
