Johns Hopkins Defeats 11th-ranked Ursinus, 4-3, in Double Overtime

The Basics
• Score: #9 Johns Hopkins-4, #11 Ursinus-3 (2OT)
• Records: JHU (13-2, 8-0 CC) • UC (9-6, 5-3 CC)
• Location: Collegeville, PA • Snell Field
• The Short Story: In a battle of top-15 teams, the match-up between ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins and 11th-ranked Ursinus did not disappoint. Hopkins rallied to defeat host Ursinus, 4-3, in double overtime Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

How it Happened
• Hopkins nearly had a three-goal first quarter but a pair of defensive saves by Erin McIlhenny kept the Blue Jays to just one goal. JHU earned a penalty stroke with 3:08 to play in the opening quarter and senior Katie McErlean converted it to stake the Jays to the early 1-0 lead.
• The Blue Jays doubled their lead just over five minutes into the second quarter as they cashed in on a three-on-one break. Sophomore Maddie Brown-Scherer drew the defender and then played the ball out to freshman Sadie Aboud, who scored from a tight angle on the right end line.
• The Bears battled back with three unanswered in a five-minute span to take a 3-2 lead into the half. Ursinus converted on a penalty corner at the 25:22-mark to spark the run. Erin Saybolt received the corner and then passed to Devon Carroll, who dribbled in and fired a shot to the right post. Just three minutes later, Saybolt collected a rebound off a Kaitlin Hall save and scored from the left side to tie the game at two. Carroll then put Ursinus on top as she scored off another Bears' corner with just six seconds left in the half.
• Hopkins answered the Ursinus' run with a strike from sophomore Izzy Thompson at 39:47. Junior Michaela Corvi corralled the ball off a blocked shot, dribbled through the defense and then sent a cross-crease pass to Thompson, who tipped it in at the right post.
• The score would remain that way for more than 40 minutes as the teams battled through a scoreless fourth quarter and nearly 20 minutes of overtime. With time winding down in the second overtime, the Blue Jays earned a corner. Sophomore Abby Birk inserted the corner to McErlean, who then passed to Corvi. She took one touch and then slotted the game-winner past Addie Frey with just 7.3 seconds remaining.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 5-22 all-time against Ursinus and has won three straight over the Bears. This is just the second win for Hopkins at Ursinus since the series began in 2002, and the first since 2004.
• Head coach Jane Wells needs just two wins to earn her 200th career win.
