Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Wins Sixth Straight

Two big home runs and a stellar pitching performance from freshman Truman Devitt continued Muhlenberg baseball's current hot streak with a 4-1 victory over Ursinus.

The win extended the Mules' current winning streak to six games, including five straight Centennial Conference games. The overall streak for the Mules (17-16, 9-6 CC) is the longest in 13 years, and they last won five straight CC games back in 2008.

Not only was the victory important to the streak, but it also improved Muhlenberg's position in the CC standings. With Haverford losing, the Mules moved into a tie with Haverford for fourth place. If the season ended today, Muhlenberg would be in the CC playoffs thanks to its season sweep of Haverford.

Muhlenberg benefited offensively from two solo home runs. Junior Chris Grillo blasted the first long ball in the fifth inning to tie the game. One inning later, junior Matt Riebesell broke the tie with a solo shot of his own to left field.

Sophomores Brenden Weiss and John Serruto added insurance runs with RBI singles in the sixth and ninth innings, respectively.

Devitt kept the Bears (9-19-1, 4-10-1 CC) in check after giving up an early run, pitching deep into the ninth inning on his way to earning his first career victory. The freshman struck out a season-best 10 batters, the most by a Mule freshman since 1998.

Devitt pitched his way through a potential jam in the eighth inning by inducing an inning-ending ground ball. Ursinus put runners on base again in the ninth, but senior Timmy Pilrun ended the threat by getting the final groundout for his first career save.

Grillo and sophomore Jack Avallone (pictured above) led the Mules with three hits apiece. Grillo has collected multiple hits in seven of his last eight games. He also hit a double on his way to reaching 40 career extra-base hits.

Muhlenberg pitchers have recorded 251 strikeouts this season, only three away from tying the school record set last season.
